ABOUT ME
Putting My Experience
to Work
Stephen is a proud 41-year-old Lubbock native whose roots run deep in this community. He began his educational journey at Wheatley and Meadgen Elementary Schools and was actively involved in his youth group at First Progressive Baptist Church, where he discovered his passion for music as a member of the church's music ministry. Continuing his education at Alderson Junior High, he not only excelled in sports, but also furthered his musical talents in the school band, inspired by exceptional mentors like Bobby Patterson and Carolyn Thompson, a former Lady Red Raider basketball star.
After attending Estacado and transferring to Monterey High School, Stephen felt the call to serve his country and enlisted in the U.S. Army as a 92Y (Unit Supply Specialist). His military service taught him invaluable life lessons while he traveled across the United States.
Upon returning to Lubbock, Stephen dedicated himself to working with the youth in various churches, including First Progressive and Alexander Chapel. His commitment to children’s ministry did not go unnoticed, earning him recognition and awards from his church. During this time, he met his wife, McKinzie Sanders, and together they began to build a family.
Stephen's community involvement extends beyond the church. He has served on the United Way's Board of Review and the TYFA football team's Board of Trustees. He also founded a group dedicated to serving people experiencing homelessness, providing food, and listening to their challenges. Notably, he organized Lubbock's second annual Peace Rally and was the Assistant Chair for organizing Juneteenth festivities.
In 2018, Stephen felt a higher calling to break down racial barriers in our city and politics, leading him to run for mayor. Initially a write-in candidate in 2018, he officially appeared on the ballot in 2020, garnering an impressive 44% of the vote. This journey has equipped him with a deep understanding of city government and the urgent areas that require improvement while building valuable relationships within the community.
As a Christian, conservative, and pro-life candidate, Stephen Sanders embodies the spirit of a go-getter. With eight years of experience in the political realm—two as an activist and six running for office—he is committed to excellence and holds the public's interest close to his heart. Stephen has set high standards for himself and will tirelessly advocate for change until his vision for a better Lubbock is realized.
